Pregnancy is lived one day at a time, and then suddenly it's over. Plenty of moms wish they had more photos from those months. A well-planned maternity session gives you images of your bump, your partner and your older kids that you'll treasure for good.
The most common question is when to book it. Here's a general guide, outfit ideas and a checklist so you arrive calm and comfortable.
When is the best time for the session?
Every pregnancy is different, so there's no single "perfect" week. As a general guide, many moms choose a date sometime in the third trimester, when the bump is clearly showing but they still have the energy to move, change outfits and stay on their feet for a while.
Before you set a date, check with your doctor or midwife, especially if your pregnancy has any special considerations or you're expecting twins. They know your situation and can tell you what makes sense for you.
Signs it's a good time
- Your bump has the shape you want to see in photos.
- You feel energetic for an hour or two at a stretch.
- Your doctor hasn't asked you to rest or limit activity.
Why not wait until the very end
- Energy and comfort can change in the final weeks.
- Babies sometimes arrive early.
- It leaves room to reschedule if you're not feeling well on the day.
Our advice: book early and pick a date with some cushion. If anything changes, we'll move it.
Studio or outdoors?
| Studio | Outdoors | |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | A/C, a place to sit, restroom nearby | Depends on weather and heat |
| Light | Controlled, great for silhouettes | Natural, warm at sunset |
| Privacy | Complete, ideal for bare-bump shots | Public spaces |
| Style | Elegant, editorial, timeless | Romantic, natural, scenic |
In Miami, heat and humidity are a real factor for much of the year. If you prefer outdoors, choose early morning or the last hour before sunset, and always keep water close.
What to wear
Dresses that flatter the bump
- Fitted, stretchy dresses: they show the shape of your bump elegantly.
- Long, flowy gowns: fabric that moves with a breeze or a twirl; gorgeous outdoors.
- Capes and tulle: a dramatic, editorial feel in the studio.
When you request a quote, ask about options from our dress collection and we'll tell you which styles work best for a maternity session.
More intimate looks
- Your partner's shirt, open or knotted.
- A knit set or neutral bodysuit.
- A draped fabric wrap for artistic studio shots.
Colors that work
- Neutrals (cream, beige, white, soft gray) for a timeless result.
- Earth tones or pastels outdoors.
- One bold color (red, deep blue) against a plain backdrop for high-impact portraits.
For your partner and kids
Coordinate colors without matching. Avoid big logos and tiny busy prints. If you have older children, bring a comfortable outfit for them and a small treat for afterward.
Photo ideas
- A profile silhouette with your hands on your bump.
- Your partner hugging you from behind.
- Big siblings kissing or listening to the bump.
- Details: the ultrasound, first tiny shoes, baby's name in letters.
- A portrait of just you, looking into the camera.
Bringing the whole family in
A maternity session doesn't have to be just about mom. A few ways to include everyone:
- Your partner: a few shots together, face to face or both looking at the bump, often end up as favorites.
- Older siblings: give them a simple job, like holding the ultrasound or a "big brother" sign. They'll feel included and look natural.
- Grandparents: if they live nearby, a three-generation portrait is a very special keepsake.
- Pets: they're family too; bring someone to look after them between shots.
Plan the family portion first, while kids still have energy, and save individual portraits for the end.
How to stay comfortable
- Get a good night's sleep before.
- Eat something light before you leave.
- Bring water, a snack and comfortable shoes for getting around.
- Wear seamless, skin-tone undergarments.
- Moisturize in the days before (skip shimmery products on the day).
- Ask for breaks whenever you need them: the session adapts to you.
If you feel unwell on the day, tell us. Your comfort and your baby's come first, and a rescheduled session is always better than one you don't enjoy.
