The best light at Crandon Park
The beach faces east, so the sun rises over the ocean. In the afternoon the palms give shade and the light on the sand turns warm; the exact time depends on what the park allows.
- Sunrise: the sun comes up out of the sea and the beach is nearly empty.
- Late day: palm shade and golden backlight, soft on skin.
- Season: November to April is cooler, drier and has fewer mosquitoes; from May to October we choose sunrise for the heat and plan around afternoon storms.
What to wear at Crandon Park
The beach calls for light fabrics and airy colors. Think tones that blend with the sand and sky rather than fight them.
- Families: white, sand, light blue and a touch of coral or terracotta.
- Maternity: chiffon or tulle gowns that float in the wind.
- Barefoot is perfect; leave the shoes in the bag.
