Everglades National Park protects South Florida's vast subtropical wetland. Two very photogenic areas are Shark Valley, with its open prairie, and the Anhinga Trail, a boardwalk over the water.

When to go and how to stay safe
There are no buildings for shade out here, so low sun is key. We plan the time and the drive with you based on what the park allows.
- Season: the dry season, roughly December to April, is best: less heat, fewer mosquitoes and more birds. May to October brings afternoon storms and heavy mosquitoes.
- Light: late afternoon for golden skies over the prairie; early morning for soft haze and cooler air.
- We always stay on trails and boardwalks and keep our distance from alligators, birds and all wildlife. We never feed them or use them as props.
- Bring water, repellent, sunscreen and a hat; the heat feels stronger here than in the city.
What to wear in the Everglades
The landscape is gold and green under wide skies. Solid colors and light fabrics look best and feel better.
- Flowy midi or long dresses without a train, in white, rust, blue or olive.
- For him: a linen or cotton shirt and long pants, which also help against insects.
- Closed, comfortable shoes for walking; no stilettos on the boardwalks.
- An extra long-sleeve layer for the buggier moments.
